| There are no shortages of plans and ideas in Ghana, since the Ghanaian people are very creative and willing to get involved. However a lack of resources and opportunities makes the implementation of these ideas difficult. Therefore, a little help is needed to see these ideas realised. The Meet Kate Foundation works to ensure more opportunities for the future of children, and also guarantees that parents and members of the community participate to become self-reliant. Take for instance Philomena Fynn (60). She didn't have parents who could take care of her and she lost several children herself. Philomena was encouraged to get involved when she saw the need in her community (the village Ekwamkrom) to provide children with a loving and safe shelter. Her dream was to establish a children's home. The initiative and the love for the children were there, but the (financial) resources were not available. Philomena met Kelly de Vries, and together they were able to make that dream become a reality. The Meet Kate Children's Home opened in July 2010, and Philomena is now the director and "mother" of many happy children. The Meet Kate Foundation invests in these kinds of initiatives. We believe in the positive side of Africa, and the possibilities that there are. We focus primarily on education, so the children will be able to determine their own future. Within our projects, the Meet Kate Foundation always makes sure that there is major involvement of families and the immediate community. The Meet Kate Foundation aims to ensure that the projects are self-sufficient within five years.Through sustainable projects, such as a cocoa plantation and a chicken farm, money is brought in and eventually the projects will become self-reliant. This is the way we believe it should be. It all started with that one dream of Philomena. Now, 5 years later, the Meet Kate Foundation is very proud of all that it has established and achieved. And there are still new accomplishments every day. For instance: Abena has just learned to read and write at the age of 11. Theo, who works here at the Children's Home as our ''house dad'', is finally able to go back to finish high school at 23 years old! And Auntie Ama’s mother, can now go back to work because her daughter is attending our nursery. There are many more ideas and plans that inspire. And with a small investment it can lead to their realization. Are you in? |
